Zillertal / Hintertux

The Zillertal area has two large ski resorts surrounded by the heavily glaciated Zillertal Alps. Located north of Innsbruck, it is one of Austria’s most popular skiing destinations.

Zillertal 3000 / Hintertux

This ski resort is best known for the highly sought after Hintertux glacier, which is the only place in Austria with year-round (365 days) skiing. The area’s capital is the town of Mayrhofen, which is nestled in the foothills of the local mountains, in the valley leading to the glacier. This is a traditional tourist mountaineering and skiing destination offering a wide range of leisure and entertainment options (a water park, indoor squash and tennis courts and an active social scene).

Located above the town of Mayrhofen are two ski resorts, including Ahorn, which since 2006 has been the home of Austria’s biggest cable car. Each gondola of the Ahornbahn can hold 160 people. The famous Ski Zillertal 3000 resort complex was created by connecting the former ski resorts of Penken, Eggalm, Rastkogel and Finkenberg. For the daring and most advanced skiers, the resort offers the steepest ski slope in Austria, the Harakiri, with a 78° angle of descent. The entire Ski Zillertal 3000 resort has 68 different cable cars and ski lifts and a total of 225 km of maintained ski runs, which reach up to a maximum elevation of 3,250 m. Zillertal Arena

The second popular skiing destination in the Zillertal Valley is the Zillertal Arena ski resort, which includes the towns of Wald / Königsleiten, Krimml, Hochkrimml, Gerlos and Zell am Ziller. Together they make up a state-of-the-art ski resort, which is considered one of the best in Austria. There are more than 200 km of ski runs and excellent snow conditions thanks to its high elevation (Konigsleiten approx. 1,600 m and Gewrlos approx. 1,300 m). The resort’s well-maintained slopes are good for beginning and advanced skiers and there are excellent facilities for snowboarders.

The resort’s modern transportation infrastructure with its large capacity provides excellent connectivity between all parts of the resort. The small town of Krimml is famous (in addition to being known as a popular ski destination) for the Krimmler waterfalls, which are among the highest in Europe, and for its natural, artificially illuminated, sled run. More information about this area can be found at www.zillertalarena.at.
